Miso A Seaweed that Slims?

Ever heard of Miso soup? No neither had I until I was handed an article last week.

It seems that it is a delicious Japanese soup that can help you burn off excess fat.

Researchers in Japan have found that a type of brown seaweed known as Wakame, used in many Asian soups and salads and a key ingredient in Miso soup, contains a compound that appears to help shrink belly fat.

Animals who were fed the compound, called fucoxanthin, lost 5 to 10% of their body weight, mostly from around their middles. The compound also increased their metabolism and helped reduce levels of harmful cholesterol.

For some reason the scientists have gone down on record of saying, that they hope this breakthrough will lead to a natural slimming pill containing the compound! Why, Why a pill?

I think there are a few more tests to do first but I think a trip to the store for some Miso might be a good idea.

If you are religious, spending more time at church, helping out wherever and whenever possible would also be a major benefit to your general .

Achieving these goals will help you to feel more satisfied with what you have, in turn helping you to live a longer, healthier life.

Aduki Bean Casserole

It’s a little more crowded in the kitchen this week. Tracey our favorite cook has just arrived back from her break visiting family in France and she has invited over friends Ken & Sally. Today we are going to prepare one of Sally’s recipes. So here we go with a delicious,

healthy, low fat,filling meal:

SALLY’S ADUKI BEAN CASSEROLE (serves 4)

Ingredients:    - 2 cups of Aduki Beans – 2 medium size carrots chopped – 1/2 Butternut squash chopped – 2 sticks of celery chopped – 1 medium onion chopped – 2 – 3 cloves of garlic (or to taste) chopped – Spices of your choice – vegetable stock – Splash of olive oil – Fresh coriander finely chopped – 1 cup of chopped bean sprouts

Method: - Soak Aduki Beans in water overnight. – Drain & rinse beans before covering with water and cooking until tender. – Cook carrots and butternut squash in a pan of water until tender (alternatively steam). – Lightly fry the garlic, chopped onion and celery in a splash of olive oil. – Place all ingredients together in one pan and stir in vegetable stock and spices and reheat. – Right at the end of cooking add the coriander and bean sprouts before serving. To serve: Serve with a salad or fresh wholemeal bread

Notes: - You can vary the recipe by using different vegetables of your choice. – Adjust the consistency of this dish to your liking by adjusting how much fluid you use. – Varying the cooking times of the vegetables to suit – Eg: some people prefer well cooked vegetables whilst others prefer crunchy vegetables.

This diet focuses on providing you with good carbohydrates and healthy fats, yes there are such things as healthy fats. This diet stops you craving all those bad carbohydrates and unhealthy fats, which work against you winning your battle to achieve your diet goals and leave you hungry all the time.

The south beach diet is divided into three phases. which is not unlike other diet plans such as the Atkins diet.

The first is designed to help you change your diet to one that is filled with eating healthy lean types of meat, such as beef, lamb, pork, veal, chicken, fish, and seafood. It has to be said there is not really such a thing as unhealthy meat just the way it is prepared and or cooked.

All meat should be broiled or baked, not fried, and should not be coated with breading or crumbs; this adds extra carbohydrates and calories that you are trying to avoid when on the South Beach Diet.

You should also eat plenty of vegetables, nuts, eggs, and low-fat or fat-free cheeses are also allowed so long as they are not coated with anything adding extra calories although pineapple and chive would be fine.

Vegetables should be steamed and plain, no sauces or butter at this stage of the diet. phase one of the South Beach Diet is the most restrictive, and does not permit you to have breads or baked goods of any kind, rice, pastas, potatoes, fruit, candy, ice cream, sugar, or alcohol. It would not be much of a diet if it did really would it ?

You can have sugar-free treats, but they should be limited to seventy-five calories per day which if you wondering is not very much. I know exactly what you’re thinking, don’t get disheartened and quit at this stage.

You will be pleased to know that this part of the diet only lasts the first two weeks, and is designed to get your body used to only having good carbohydrates to jump start your weight loss and eradicate your cravings.

Some people say it works well while others find it very restrictive and could be hard if you are on a tight budget as better cuts of meat for example can be rather more expensive.

In phase two, you will slowly add back in sweet potatoes (which are not really that bad anyway), wild or brown rice, whole grain breads and cereals, fresh fruits, and red or white wines. Don’t forget that not of this is compulsory and just suggested additions.

You should avoid such vegetables as carrots, beets, white potatoes, and corn because of their high sugar content, and also fruits like bananas, pineapples, raisins, and watermelon. These seems to contradict the eat fruit as part of the diet and you may find hard to understand the distinction between fruits you can have and those to avoid.For simplicity think if it is citrus it’s OK so that’s lemons, limes and oranges also apples , pears it seems OK also berries such as raspberries and blueberries .

Some other more obvious foods that will slow down your weight loss efforts include cookies, cakes, sweet rolls, and ice cream.

These should be kept to a bare minimum if you have them at all but try to avoid them if at all possible.

You need to stick to phase two until you reach your goal weight this could be a long while if you have put on a lot of weight and have an ambitious target sticking at this could be difficult but if you persevere you will eventually get to

Phase three or the maintenance phase this is something that people find difficult and is why so many people put weight lost back on again especially if initial weight loss has been to dramatic but has only been achieved with a very restrictive regimen.

All you need do for this phase is continue to practice the good eating habits you have learned and maintain your weight. The South Beach Diet is heart healthy and is designed to teach dieters how to lose weight effectively and keep it off for their lifetime. No more yo-yo dieting or that’s the theory anyway.

Vegetable Diets and Cramps

I read an article yesterday that was answering a question of why do people get cramps when on Vegetable diets.

All the article could suggest was that the most likely reason was that people that suffered with this was that their previous diet that was low in fiber and the sudden increase in fiber from the vegetables was causing the cramps.

Yeah, this may be true but was the article missing a very important point?!

Snack Your Way To Fat Loss With The Best Of All Snack Foods…Can You Believe These Are Healthy?

First of all, you can forget the chips, cookies, chocolate etc. Way to high in calories & way too high in sugar & fat. Once in a while, they’re ok, but daily, they’re a real killer to your weight loss program

If you are trying to lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks or 5lbs in a week forget any of the traditionally forbidden foods.

But even when your are on such a diet you need snacks which keep the munchies at bay so why not try these low-calorie, healthy, tasty snacks instead:

- Fruit, (Fresh fruit is the best pretty much any in season) but also stewed fruit or canned fruit without syrup.

- Fat-free, low-salt pretzels. (rub off some of the salt, and they’re even better, but don’t eat an entire bag)

- Air-popped popcorn. Instead of butter, add black pepper, or oregano, or a little sprinkle of grated parmesan cheese. But stay clear of anything BUT air-popped. This means make it fresh and if it mentions the words toffee, treacle, syrup, give it a wide berth.

- Frozen bananas. Peel them, insert popsicle sticks and freeze. You’ll absolutely LOVE them. Great on in hot summer or even a warm spring But I guess if you are just going ice fishing maybe not ideal for winter snacking.

- Bagels, bread, nonfat crackers, (use these in moderation, too much carbohydrates equals too much sugar for your body)

- Nonfat cottage cheese. Good for you a good source of protein also. Tastes yummy as well.

- Chilled vegetable salad. Steam vegetables,add soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, orange juice or some other low-fat marinade and refrigerate.

- Nonfat frozen yogurt. (Much better than ice-cream)

- Nonfat yogurt. Add fresh fruit, or for crunch, try Grape Nuts cereal which is fat free.

- Fat-free tortilla chips with salsa. (Again, use in moderation as they can pile on the carbs)
